Ireland’s Music Festivals: From Creative Conceptualisation to Realisation - Can clarity on identified barriers nurture a burgeoning industry?
This research relates to the music festival industry in Ireland with a focus on independent music and arts festivals. These events have proliferated in recent years resulting in debate on the rules, regulations and best practice guidelines governing the staging of these festivals. Integral to this thesis is understanding how practitioners are currently operating within these guidelines.
Seven festival creators took part in both group and individual based interviews to aid current understanding. Concept creation and influencing factors are explored while identifying and examining barriers to their realisation. Specific players, conditions and compliance issues encountered from event conceptualisation to realisation are identified and discussed.
Individual experiences highlight the need for guidelines to be updated to reflect the uniqueness of these festivals and the industry more broadly. Suggestions aimed at improving governance and compliance are made in line with the experiences and expectations of current practitioners.
