“The idea becomes a machine that makes the art" (Sol LeWitt, 2003, p. 846). Acclaimed words from the American artist Sol LeWitt (1928-2007) with regards to how he believes ‘art-making’ begins. The rational in art has evidently existed in artists work throughout the centuries, with Sol LeWitt, the Conceptual and Minimalist artist, implementing such ideas to his works. With a particular interest in geometry and rule-based approaches to art as a practicing student, I found it imperative to research where and how this style of approach began. I am interested in why some artists choose to begin a piece in such a way and what type of techniques they use.
